Prices & fees: what we track, what we don't
Honest answer first: no dealer's per-gallon price publishes on this directory except where the dealer publishes it themselves — propane pricing moves daily and any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it. Live local price comparison already exists — fuelwonk.com tracks heating-oil and propane prices by area, and we'd rather link the specialist than imitate one.
The dealers who publish their own numbers
- Parker's Propane — a full pricing page: current price, first-fill price, complete pre-buy contract terms, and a dated price history back to 2019. The most transparent dealer site in the region.
- Fairgrove Oil & Propane — a dated homepage price board (propane + both heating-oil grades, minimums included) plus a published fee schedule: $75 run-out pressure test, $75 emergency delivery, 500-gallon pre-buy minimum.
- Cass City Oil & Gas — daily fuel prices with will-call minimums on their homepage.
- Hamilton's Propane — pre-buy and current rate posted on their homepage banner.
Those four listings carry the numbers verbatim, attributed and dated. That's the bar this directory hopes the rest of the roster clears — and the verification calls ask every dealer why not.
Why terms beat price anyway
Two dealers three miles apart can be thirty cents apart on the gallon — and the cheaper one can still cost you more by spring once card fees, a tank rental and a delivery minimum you didn't know about get done. The per-gallon number is one line of the winter bill. The rest of the bill is the terms we verify:
- Card fees — a few dollars per payment, times every fill, all winter.
- Delivery minimums — forced gallons you didn't need, or a fill that won't schedule.
- Tank rental — a monthly charge that quietly outlives the “first fill free” deal.
- Will-call vs auto-fill pricing — sometimes different for the same fuel.
How fee facts land on this site
Every dealer listing carries fee and contract rows — card fees, minimums, will-call terms, tank terms, deals — and each row is either a published term (read off the dealer's own site, attributed and dated) or confirming, verification call pending. When a dealer tells us their terms by phone, the listing publishes the answer as told to us, with the date. We don't estimate, round, or “help.” If a dealer won't answer, the row keeps saying confirming — which is itself an answer.
Ballparks worth knowing (national anchors, not quotes)
- Michigan residential propane has historically swung roughly $2–$4/gallon across seasons — fall fills run cheaper than January emergencies almost every year.
- Summer fills (April–August) are traditionally the year's cheapest window; pre-buy plans price in early summer through fall.
- Out-of-gas service — after-hours fill, leak check, possible purge — is the most expensive way to buy the same gallon. A quarter-tank habit beats every price app.
